Match Report
FC United’s women gained three valuable points in warm spring sunshine at Abraham Moss, beating second placed Beechfield United 6-2 in a much closer game than the score line suggests. The first goal wasn’t scored until the 40th minute when Feiruz Abdullahi broke the deadlock giving the reds a slender half time lead.

The second half opened up and Abdullahi scored another three goals, Hannah Dobie and Leah Hartshorne one each punctuated by two impressive strikes from Beechfield United. Later in the half, medical attention was required for United’s keeper Chloe Williams and Beechfield’s defender Gemma Winterburn for known medical conditions and both were taken to hospital as a precaution; we wish both a speedy return to good health.

Beechfield got things underway but inside the first minute FC United were on the attack down the right hand side. An excellent cross by Charlie Evans was well defended and cleared up field from which the visitors sprung an attack of their own down the left with Debbie Wright centring a low cross which Chloe Williams fielded just ahead of centre forward, Sophie Wainwright.

A combination of strong defences, excellent keeping and sweeping attacks by both sides ensued in equal measure in an absorbing contest with the deadlock finally being broken just five minutes before half time. Having had the ball in the net on 38 minutes but being adjudged offside, Abdullahi had her reward for shear endeavour just two minutes later after she latched onto a delightful pass from Beth Hayes, beat the offside trap rounded the excellent Dawn Parkes and slotted home to give United a half time lead.

FC United made three changes at the start of the second half opting to strengthen centre midfield at the expense of a striker. The move paid dividends as the Reds began to dominate possession in midfield and one of the introductions, Shauna Ward, had a golden opportunity to double the lead on 50 minutes as another introduction, Leah Hartshorne, fed a pass into the penalty area where the unmarked Ward fired over the bar from 12 yards. The third of the midfield introductions, Hannah Dobie made no mistake a minute later as she collected a throw from Evans and fired a stunning half volley through a crowded penalty area and beyond the despairing dive of Parkes to double the lead.

Five minutes elapsed and Abdullahi latched onto a defence splitting pass from Amy Battel and lobbed Parkes from the edge of the area as the keeper rushed out in vain to meet the danger as the ball bounced into the unguarded goal to give the striker her second of the afternoon.

Beechfield kept pressing to find a way back into the game and were rewarded on 65 minutes as Sophie Wainwright worked space for herself on the edge of United’s area and fired a superb shot beyond Williams to reduce the deficit.

However, Abdullahi effectively confirmed the three points scoring two in quick succession in the 68th and 72nd minutes, to take her personal tally to four and the team into a 5-1 lead. Her hat trick was a superb team goal started by Abdullahi keeping the ball in play wide on the left on half way feeding a pass up the line for Chambers who squared to Hartshorne who in turn spotted Abdullahi arriving in the box, weighted her pass perfectly for the striker to slot the ball home from seven yards. Just minutes later Battel found Chambers who cut down the left edge of the area and fired a low cross to the near post for Abdullahi to squeeze the ball home under pressure from keeper and defender.

After a ten minute stoppage for Chloe Williams to receive treatment, the game resumed with just two minutes left on the clock but at least twelve left to play.

Beechfield started the brighter after the enforced break and excellent work down the left by Danielle Farrand resulted in the ball switching to the left edge of United’s area where Rebecca Watkins fired an unstoppable shot beyond substitute keeper Mary Priestner.

Hartshorne ended all hopes of a Beechfield comeback in time added on as she bravely met a Dobie Corner at the near post, besting her defender and heading beyond the keeper from close range. In a compulsive end to end last few minutes of the game neither side could add to their tally although Shellby Wolstencroft struck the post with an effort in the closing moments.

Referee Warner called time on an enthralling game of football that was a credit to both sides and the league. The result means that Beechfield can no longer catch United and the two sides meet again at Beechfield’s Littleton Road ground in a fortnight in what will be the host’s last league game of the campaign. Before then however, both sides are in League Challenge Cup semi final action at Our Lady’s High School, Blackley next Sunday as FC play Uppermill Ladies on one pitch whilst Beechfield play Little Lever Sports on the other.

Get yourself to that venue for a 2pm kick off.
