New Moston Play Scheme

Depending on who you are there are three words that either fill you with dread or fill you with excitement – ‘the summer holidays.’ Parents wonder how to keep their children occupied for six weeks and children want to forget about school and have lots of fun.

Well heads were put together and the criteria that both the kids and adults were looking for were answered. So FC United teamed up with NEPHRA and ZEST for two weeks in August to put on an array of activities and events to keep local children entertained. This formed the New Moston Play Scheme which is lottery funded with contributions from ZEST.

NEPHRA is a residents association based in New Moston where they work with the residents and the wider community. ZEST is North Manchester’s Healthy Living Project working with local people in improving health and well being.

The play scheme is the second of its kind with one taking place in June 2010 and another one already in the pipeline for October 2010. Taking place at New Moston Primary School in North Manchester, the play scheme was both entertaining and educating which meant that the children were learning all the time. It gave the kids a hands-on experience and allowed them to get thoroughly involved and continually gain knowledge of different subjects on offer.

The days featured special guests including Crocodile Joe who came in with his snakes, spiders and other creatures. Tina the Street Cheer Instructor and Dave the Tai Chi Instructor were keeping the kids active by showing them new ways to keep fit. The kids could also get their faces painted from the ZEST team during the holidays with some great tributes to FC.

FC United coaches were on hand to help and assist in any way possible alongside volunteers from NEPHRA and FC United plus ZEST staff. There was an incredible amount of interest from parents and guardians and lots of enthusiasm from the children.

There were lots of things for the kids to do including football, benchball, basketball, and other team games. Besides the activities the children played snakes and ladders and card games, painted their own t-shirts, helped prepare and cook healthy food using some of the vegetables grown in the NEPHRA allotment.

There were lots of great opportunities that the play scheme brought including trips to Broadway Swimming Baths in New Moston and a fantastic chance to follow in the footsteps of cycling’s Olympic Gold Medallist Chris Hoy, by cycling at Manchester Velodrome.

It was an incredibly popular event with 94 local children participating in at least one session which averaged between 40 and 60 kids each day.

The children and their parents and guardians got taken to FC United’s first home game of the season against Nantwich Town. Before the match they got a behind the scenes tour meeting staff and players with the opportunity interviewing them about all things FC United. They managed to witness FC winning 1-0 with the goal coming from Jerome Wright.

Shirley Mccardell (ZEST) said “I thoroughly enjoyed working with NEPHRA and FC United in providing a full and varied events programme for the children of New Moston. This has proved that there is a real need in and around this area for ongoing activities like this for the age range between 8-11 years old and it is definitely something I would like to do again.???

Robin Pye’s, FC United’s Community & Education Manager said “We are very pleased to have been able to work with NEPHRA and ZEST. Between us I think we have delivered a project of real value to the community. I would particularly like to thank the volunteers who helped us put on the activities for the children.???

The overall response was very positive, especially from the parents. The children had a fantastic time and it was greatly organised and well run from all involved.
